TAMILIYAM TAMILDESIYAM — Gnani’s Meyyiyal Katturaikal-1: Gnani; Kaavya, 16, II Cross Street, Trustpuram, Kodambakkam, Chennai-600024. Rs. 250.
GNANI HAS been writing serious essays for the past 30 years and almost all are centered on the freedom of human beings.
This book is a collection of 48 essays written on various occasions. Kaavya has planned to publish his complete works in five volumes and this is the first.
His scholarship spans Tamil literature, culture and history, Marxism, philosophy, religion and Gandhian studies. His linguistic patriotism and Tamil national patriotism can be predominantly seen in all his works.
He has taken up many important issues such as Tamil nationalism throughout history, the place of Tamil in education and in administration in Tamil Nadu, the philosophy of the Tamils, the problem of Tamils’ identity and the philosophy of Siddhas.
Among likeminded people, his essays have been well read and elaborately discussed.
As a scholar and thinker Gnani is very well respected and his ideas were seriously considered and admired.
In this volume he has presented significant autobiographical notes which are quite useful to understand him and his innovative thoughts. Kaavya has to be congratulated on this novel venture. We hope that the remaining four volumes will also be published to enable understanding of the scholar and thinker.
