TELUGU

A new dawn

AMBIKA ANANTH

SANGHAM — by K.Chinnappa Bharathi: Translated into Telugu by Arunanandam; Prajasakthi Book House,1-1-182/1/2, Chikkadpalli, Hyderabad-20. Rs. 75.

THIS NOVEL graphically describes the wretched living conditions, blind beliefs, oppression and the class discrimination faced by the Dalit community of the hilly region “Kollimalai”. The story raises moot questions about the problems affecting such downtrodden people. The novelist seems to have taken up the issue with right earnest. The pitiable lives led by Tiruman and his wife Tirumi showcase the usual living conditions of their entire tribe. Everyone’s fate seemed to be sealed forever thanks to the powerful men in politics and government. The condition, exploitation and the grip of the feudal system become so unbearable that young Sadayan, son of Tiruman, timid by nature turns into a ‘movement maker’ in the end. How Sadayan and his friend Seerangan become strong with the help of the union leader Kumar and social activist Velusami, to usher in a new dawn in the lives of the people of Kollimalai form the storyline.

The issues portrayed make the reader rethink the fundamental wrongs in the system. The translation is very smooth.
