TELUGU

Multifaceted artist

B. S. R. KRISHNA

AMMA KADUPU CHALLAGAA — Blest Mother’s Bliss: Autobiography of Gollapoodi Maruthee Rao; Kalaathapaswi Creations, ‘Lalitha Mahal’, 10/7A, Annai Satya Nagar Main Road, Ramapuram, Chennai-600089. and also from the author, 8/6, Saradambal Street, Gokulam Colony, T. Nagar , Chennai-600017. Rs. 400.

THIS WORK is an articulate autobiography of a colourful personality. A man of many talents, Gollapoodi Maruthee Rao is a progressive journalist, who later excelled as a playwright, movie script and dialogue writer, a popular character actor on stage and screen, besides being a much sought after speaker.

His speeches are sprinkled with wit and wisdom. A widely travelled popular artist, he has more than 200 films to his credit and provided script and/or dialogues for some 80 movies. His weekly column on current affairs is well known for its punch and humour.

His life is a pilgrimage in progress. From an ordinary beneficiary he evolved into a munificent benefactor.

With uncommon fortitude, he transformed his grievous personal loss into an annual gift-giving event, honouring debutant meritorious movie directors, in memory of his son Srinivas who met with accidental death while directing his very first film “Pelli Pustakam”. His life story mirrors the cultural and literary evolution that has come about in the Telugu arena over the past six decades. He himself has been an active player and catalyst in the process. Inked in his inimitable racy style, this substantial volume makes for enjoyable and instructive reading and provides insights into several aspects of the lifestyle of the Telugu people.

This autobiography is scripted in an unconventional fashion. He who can laugh at himself is a mature man. Maruthee Rao is an example.
