BRAHMA SUTRA SANKARA BHASHYAM — Third and Fourth Adhyayas: Tamil translation of Sankara’s commentary by Brahmasri Kadalangudi Natesa Sastrigal; Kadalangudi Publications, 38, Natesa Ayyar Street, T. Nagar, Chennai-600017. Rs. 450.
THIS IS the third and final volume of the Tamil translation of Sankara’s commentary on the Brahmasutras by the learned author. It covers the third and the fourth chapters with four sections each. At the commencement of each chapter, there is a synopsis of what follows. Being a Tamil translation, it will serve a wider audience.
The first chapter explains that all Vedantic streams are consonant with the concept that Brahman (Supreme Reality) is non-dual. In the second, the apparent contradictions that arise through philosophical disputations about this concept are resolved. In the third chapter (the present publication) the meaning of attaining (figurative usage) of the said Brahman is discussed. The fourth deals with liberation. The special feature of this volume is that quotations have been given from Vaiyasikiya Nyayamala with its Tamil translation, making for easier understanding of the Acharya’s commentary.
The index to the Sutras, given at the end of the book, serves as a ready-reckoner. The scholar has done a great service by his very lucid translation in Tamil.
