Towards Social Development — An Anthology of C.D.Deshmukh Memorial Lectures: Edited by K.S.Bhat; Council for Social Development, Hyderabad & Rawat Publications, Satyam Apts, Sector-3, Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur-302004. Rs. 575.
This is a comprehensive collection of eight lectures on development issues delivered by renowned authorities as part of the Dr. C.D.Deshmukh Memorial Lectures at the Council for Social Development, Hyderabad. Five of the lectures are on the subject of economic planning and policy making, which was the major preoccupation of Dr. C.D.Deshmukh during the best part of his highly distinguished career as a public servant and a representative and voice of the people. Among the remaining three lectures, two are on education and the third is on the media. Some of the analyses and perceptions in a few of the lectures might have outlived their purpose, but largely on account of the unfortunate intractability of several of our problems these lectures are of long-term value and relevance.
The Lost Art of Healing — Practicing Compassion in Healing: Bernard Lown; Hay House Publishers (India) Pvt. Ltd., Muskaan Complex, Plot No.3, B-2, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi-110070. Rs. 295.
In this wise and compassionate book, the author who is an eminent physician reacquaints us with a classic notion often overlooked in modern medicine: that healing is an art. The real crisis in medicine today is not about economics, insurance or managed care — it’s about the loss of the fundamental human relationship between doctor and patient. Drawing on four decades of practice as a cardiologist and a vast knowledge of literature and medical history, the author describes how true healers use sympathetic listening and touch to hone their diagnostic skills, how language affects the perception of illness, how doctors and patients can cultivate a relationship of trust, and how patients can obtain the most complete and beneficial care through a combination of healing techniques and conventional practices.
School Health Services in India — The Social and Economic Contexts: Edited by Rama V. Baru; Sage Publications India Pvt. Ltd., B1/I-1 Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, Mathura Road, New Delhi-110044. Rs. 550.
This work broadens the perspective of school health in India by locating it within the epidemiological and socio-economic context of children in the school-going age group. The collection of papers explores the social context and programmes for school health in the country, including the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Scheme, School Health Services and School Health Education. Studies have shown that socio-economic factors play a very important role in determining enrolment, retention, completion and learning in schools. This book analyses the relationship between levels of malnutrition and minor and major illnesses on the one hand, and socio-economic status, on the other. It also examines in detail the different components of the school health programme in India and how they function in different contexts. In addition, it showcases the experiences of three NGOs which have adopted innovative approaches to transact health education in government schools in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
