KANNADA

On men and matters

V. GOPALAKRISHNA

BALLAVARU BAHALILLA:

H.Y. Sharada Prasad, Translated by Prabhushankara & B.V.Sreedhar, Abhinava, 17/18-2, I Main Road, Marenahalli, Vijayanagara, Bengaluru-560040. Rs. 75.

THIS WORK is a translation of 24 articles selected from The Book I Won’t Be Writing by Sharada Prasad, media adviser to three former prime ministers. He gave prominence to his ideals maintaining dignity, grace and simplicity in the long course of his career. The articles reveal his wisdom, humane nature and politeness. A Gandhian, freedom fighter and a commentator, he was known for his felicity in Kannada and English; he guided and helped many journalists to pursue their career.

He has freely expressed his feelings on varied subjects and events which he observed on several occasions. He is critical about the political leaders who speak loudly and later deny the same. At the same time he also criticises the press reporters who turn a press meet into a forum for discussion of irrelevant questions deviating far from the very purpose of the meeting. There are articles on some political leaders who without sufficient knowledge on the subject speak a lot to appease the followers leading to clashes, and also about unprecedented incidents, traditions, meaningless rules and regulations, diplomats and civil service personnel. The one on the visit to Ananda Bhavan in Allahabad to collect old documents and manuscripts of the Nehru family is very interesting.
