AZHAGIRISAMI ILAKKIYATHTHADAM: Kaavya, 16 II Cross Street, Trustpuram, Kodambakkam, Chennai-600024. Rs. 125.
A CONTEMPORARY of Pudumaipithan, Ku. Azhagirisami (1923-70) also achieved immortality through his writings. Culled from various sources, this anthology of 25 articles by the writing fraternity speaks volumes of his talent in different genres with short stories taking precedence. The man behind the literary giant comes alive through the first nine articles. Ki. Rajanarayanan recalls his association with Azhagirisami right from their boyhood days. A serious fracture in the left hand turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the boy from the working class to turn to school education and come out with flying colours in the SSLC is described with stark realism. How he switched over to writing from the boredom of clerical work, the celebrities he worked under during his career as a writer, his five-year tenure in the journal Tamil Nesan of Malaysia where he found his marriage partner and his return to Chennai where he established his reputation in the chosen field are all vividly brought out by authors of renown. Literary reviews of his works are among the highlights of this publication. One can’t help admiring his stupendous achievements. His three novels, innumerable articles, translations and several volumes of short stories including children’s fiction reflect his creative spark.
