TELUGU
Progressive litterateur
SAROJINI PREMCHAND
ARUDRA: M. Ravikumar; Sahitya Akademi, 35, Rabindra Bhavan, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi-110001. Rs. 40.
ARUDRA’S NAME has become synonymous with “Samagra Aandhra Saahityam” (a comprehensive study of Telugu literature in 13 volumes). The other several facets of his creative genius are brilliantly laid out in this monograph, published under the series “Makers of Indian literature”. A progressive poet always experimenting with words, fresh imagery and unorthodox metaphors, Arudra fashioned a technique of his own.
An outstanding scholar, historian and critic there is no genre of literature that his creative pen has not touched and left its mark.
M. Ravikumar assisted him and was his companion during the last years, and this has enabled him to successfully capture the spirit of Arudra’s analytical mind and indefatigable energy.
Born in 1925 as Bhagavatula Sadasiva Shankara Sastri, he left college during the freedom movement. His evaluative essays on both classics and modern texts have left a great impact. He made a remarkably original contribution to the field of Bharatanatyam.
Writing for films gave him sustenance; he penned dialogues for 150 films and lyrics for 500. All his writings have an underlying vein of his social philosophy with which he was engaged throughout his life.
