Kannada

Autobiographical novel

V. GOPALAKRISHNA

ONDU GIDA MATHU ERADU HAKKIGALU: Vishram Bedekar’s Marathi Novel, Kumudini Ashok Bhairannanavar — Tr. in Kannada; Sahitya Akademi, 35, Ferozeshah Road, NewDelhi-110001. Rs. 225.

THE ORIGINAL Marathi version of this autobiographical novel written in a stream of consciousness technique heightened the position of Vishram Bedekar as a distinguished novelist during the second half of the 20th century. Marathi readers of all sections were fascinated by the new trend of writing in which the author comprehensively analyses the traits and good qualities of the characters of this novel deviating from the stereotype of narration. The most striking feature is his technique of comparing and contrasting characters in juxtaposition along with his own qualities without any prejudice. The novel is presented in two main parts. The first half gives a graphic account of the utter poverty of his boyhood, innocence of his parents, sacrifice for the sake of friendship, and experience in theatrical companies in several places across the state. The author’s style is exemplary that he characterises even a pet dog diligently. The circumstances which faded out the relationships gradually are convincing.

The second half gives an elaborate picture of his vast experience as a script and story writer for several films. The tinsel world of cinema drags the author into several controversies and he challenges them with a high spirit of sincerity and wisdom. The spirit of the original language and style are maintained throughout the translation.
