SAROJINI PREMCHAND
KADHAAVAAHINI-2008: Compiled by Rachana Sai; Vahini Book Trust, 1- 9-286/ 3, Vidyanagar, Hyderabad-500044. Rs. 130.
IN THIS anthology of 24 short stories, the first one, the story of little Vikramarka, offers a moment to moment narrative by a spastic child’s mother; how she steels herself against going to her son’s aid when he is trying to reposition his tricycle and his own body after a fall. The child gains self-confidence and the mother realises that to love is to let go. The anguish and determination of both impact the readers head-on due to a kind of dramatic immediacy put to use by Bhanumathi. A meandering tale by Johnson Choragudi goes around Vijayawada’s crowded streets drawing out book-lovers and publishing enthusiasts. Yellapragada takes us on a journey to find that elusive “inner happiness”, Vasundhara and Veda try to devise a mathematical formula for good relationship in their stories. “Bhayam” has an unusual setting. An isolated log-cabin in Alaska with night temperature dipping to -35 degrees is where Vemuri stays and records the effects of loneliness and silence on the mind. Balagangadhararao’s story evokes memories of classical stylists. Readability is a consistent feature in all the stories.
