DWEEPARAGALU — Sri Lankan Women’s Short fiction: K. Suneetha Rani — Tr. in Telugu; Aneka Publications, Hyderabad-28. Rs.110.
THESE STORIES open up a new vista for Telugu readers. Along with clear skies fringed with coconut palms, blue seas and lush gardens of our picturesque neighbouring island, the joys and the upheavals in the lives of Sri Lankan women are depicted tenderly but effectively. The second section representing the conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils has heart-rending tales. The stench of explosives, blood and human flesh and houses on fire suffocate the reader. There is a collapse of friendships and trust but still kindliness and affection do exist in the hearts, point out these stories. Jnana Moonesinghe laments that in a country where all the great religions of the world are practised why this intolerance, why this savagery. The subtlety of expression in the styles of Karuna Pereira, Jean Arasanayagam, Chandani Lokuge and others strangely heightens the emotional response of the reader. The experiential mode of narration in the stories engrosses us completely.
