Collection of essays
AMBIKA ANANTH
MA MANCHI TELUGU KATHA: Koduri Sree Ramamurthy; Vishalandhra Publishing House, 4-1-435, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500001. Rs. 100.
THIS IS a collection of 70 essays introducing some fine stories of Telugu fiction. Apart from the stories written by great legends such as Gurazada, Chaso, Tilak, Padmaraju, Munimanikyam, Bhadaru Achhamamba, the essays deal with the stories by fiction writers of recent times such as Ketu Vishwanatha Reddy, Naveen, Kavana Sharma and Vivina Murthy. Embedded in every critique is a fine perspective and an elucidation of the various dimensions of the narrative which may sometimes escape the reader’s understanding. The author, Koduri Sree Rama Murthy, a veteran critic, presents a picture which matches (sometimes excels) the original story’s beauty, thanks to his incisive exploration. The rich and varied fabric of Telugu stories is critically examined and appreciated by him with enthusiasm and erudition. He seemed to have scanned the stories, looked into minute details, picked up all facets to project them in his appraisal, taking care not to overplay or undermine the plot. The critical acumen of the author is evident in almost all the essays. His assessment is free from any bias and he identifies himself with the writings only to filter the essence and present it in his work. But the introduction to some stories seems pretty long. A must read.
