MALAYALAM

Human values

H. RAMAKRISHNAN

APUVINTE LOKAM: Bibhoothibhooshan Bandyopadhyaya;. Translated by Leela Sarkar; Distributed by Green Books Pvt.Ltd., Little Road, Ayyanthole, Thrissur-680003.

Rs. 200.

PATHER PANCHALI (The story of the road), Aporajito (unvanquished- sequel to ‘Pather Panchali’) and Apur Sansar (the world of Apu) are all plants of the same garden. Bibhoothibhooshan presents an artistic exposition of a transient life that tries to reach fulfilment by overcoming the many obstacles that come in the way. When one finds that ethics are relegated to the background owing to the trials and tribulations of life, this work encourages such an individual to turn to the basic human values.

This novel stands out for its stunning description and animated portrayal of nature in all its charm, of the village atmosphere, trees, flowers, forests, and waterfalls. It revolves round the early life of Apu.

Apu had to struggle with human relationships and the realities of life. His mother dies. And then his wife, Aparna, dies while giving birth to their son, Kajal. Unmindful of these, he goes on with his complicated life-journey. He shuns his worldly responsibilities and becomes a recluse. Finally he discovers his duty, comes back to reality and reunites with his son. They return to their roots, the village life. This is Apu’s world.

This fascinating book is sure to create in the reader an urge to get back to nature’s pristine beauty. Leela Sarkar’s translation is brilliant and amazing. Since she is equally at ease with both Bengali and Malayalam, the transcreated version offers an exciting experience to Malayalam readers.
