IN THIS critical study of the life of Bendre (Ambikatanayadatta), a distinguished poet, the author concentrates on the poet’s boyhood days as revealed in his writings.
Born in a Vedic family, Bendre was highly influenced by his mother and grandmother who played a crucial role in shaping his personality . It was particularly his grandmother who instilled in his tender mind profound reverence for life and a deep faith in God. The author cites a number of verses to establish these younger-day feelings, and they also portray the environment in which the poet was brought up. Bendre, who imbibed the folk-life milieu around him at Dharwad during those days, adopted his own style of writing, a deviation from the narrative as well as the dramatic forms which later became familiar as the ‘intellectual lyric’ in the academic circles. As a young boy, he actively participated in a number of social, cultural and religious activities conducted in and around his locality — folk-games, dramas and orchestras, religious festivals, and so on — regardless of caste or creed. The author highlights many such indelible impressions as expressed in the poetry.
The first part of the index gives the paraphrase of 19 poems, all touching upon his boyhood days. They are rendered into simple Kannada for easy comprehension. The second part lists his works and the third some important events in his life.
