TELUGU

A mirror of thought

B.S.R. KRISHNA

DR. VASIREDDY SEETHA DEVI SAAHITYAM: Volume XI.Dr. Vasireddy Seetha Devi Memorial Foundation. Copies from Visalandra Publishing House, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500001. Rs. 180.

THIS VOLUME, 11th in the series under the project to publish the complete works of Dr. Vasireddy Seetha Devi (1932-2007), includes three of her recent novels — ‘Nisaa Geetham,’ ‘Idee Katha,’ and ‘Maro Manasu Katha.’

While the earlier volumes were published during her life time, her brother Vasireddy Narayana Rao, himself a writer, has proposed to bring out her remaining works under the auspices of the Dr. Vasireddy Seetha Devi Memorial Foundation.

With 40 novels, 10 volumes of short stories, three volumes of essays, six volumes of children’s stories, and 11 translated works to her credit, Seetha Devi was one of the most celebrated authors in Telugu. A progressive writer with a rationalist, socialist, and egalitarian outlook, she portrayed her subjects mostly on the grassroots canvas which earned her the epithet ‘Andhra Pearl Buck.’ Her writings reflect the evolution of her thinking from critical realism to socialist realism. The three novels in this volume mirror the maturity of her thought.
