ANMAIYA PUNAIVUKAL-Naveena Vaasippugal: Compiled by Mo. Ilamparithi; Kaavya, 16, II Cross Street, Trustpuram, Kodambakkam, Chennai-600024. Rs. 400.
THIS WORK is a collection of 41 critical essays dealing with the recent literary creations such as short stories, novels, and modern poetry, and the subjects include performing arts, cinema, and documentary films. It is heartening that the writings of serious scholars of Tamil literature, who are quality conscious, have been compiled.
Literature should deal with certain things, in certain ways, and in certain forms. What precisely are they? Literary studies are constantly seeking to identify them by employing different parameters such as theme, form, style, and technique, on the one hand, and by constructing various theories such as naturalism, realism, surrealism, and futurism, on the other.
Like every other social phenomenon, literature and other art forms keep changing over time and in step with changes in the socio-political and cultural context. In Tamil Nadu, the contemporary Tamil literature is quantitatively large and qualitatively complex due to various internal and external causes. This volume may be legitimately considered an interesting study of these aspects.
By speaking out, without any reservation, on various kinds of literary works, performing arts, and documentaries, the contributors have helped in creating an awareness about them. The compiler, Ilamparithi, deserves commendation for his effort.
