KANNADA

Biography

V. GOPALAKRISHNA

DINAKAR DESAI: Vishnu Naik; Sahitya Akademi, 35, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi-110001. Rs. 40.

DINAKAR DESAI is well known to Kannada readers as a favourite poet of children.

This account, by a close associate of his, amplifies Desai’s contribution to various other fields such as agriculture, labour welfare, education, and journalism.

Poetry and social service were his principal aims, in pursuit of which he first became a life member of the Servants of India Society. He worked for the welfare of agricultural labourers and for imparting education to the poor.

As a member of Parliament, he championed the cause of the deprived sections of society.

Desai’s contribution to literature in Kannada, English and Konkani is noteworthy and it covered a wide range of areas — children, labour, agriculture, primary education and so on.

His poetry is known for its brevity, straight-forwardness, clarity, and wit.

An ardent educationist, he founded a number of educational institutions and strove to provide free and quality education to the downtrodden. The long list of books he has authored, the more-than-a-dozen books others have written about him, and the several awards he has won speak to his eminence as a writer and his multi-faceted personality.
