Changing village
K. KUNHIKRISHNAN
9 — Novel: Susmesh Chandrothu, DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 115.
THE THEME connects the past and the present of a remote village in the high ranges of Kerala. Its transformation from a sparsely populated village to a small town comes out clearly, with the influx of people clearing the jungles changing its topography.
The central character, Deepak Kunhikannan, son of a wandering magician, works as a photographer with an advertising firm in Chennai and has a live-in companion. Deepak gets back to his village on hearing about the death of his maternal grandfather, and it is then that the story unfolds.
As he connects with the village, Deepak is torn between a sense of alienation and the umbilical-chord link.
In the characterisation of Deepak, pulled as he is by the urge to get away to the city on the one hand and to get back to his roots at the village on the other, the author has commendably brought out the dilemma the modern-day youth are facing. Every character connected with Deepak is etched with perfection.
