IRAMAPIRANAI KARPOM (Part 4): Sri Paravakottai Srimad Andavan; Poundarikapuram Srimad Andavan Asramam, 43-A/13, Asramam Road, Srirangam-620006. Rs. 150.
THIS IS the fourth book in the series authored by Sri Paravakottai Srimad Andavan on the Ramayana under the title ‘Iramapiranai Karpom’, an expression drawn from Nammazhwar’s Thiruvoimozhi, where the saint-poet makes the point that “if at all one should learn, he should learn about Rama.” Titled ‘Sugreeva Pattabhishekham’, it deals with Kishkinda Kandam and has, as its theme, ‘mitra samrakshanam’ (protection of friendship). The duty of a messenger is highlighted brilliantly while explaining how Anjaneya, as Sugreeva’s envoy introduced himself to Rama and gained his confidence through his eloquent speech.
The combat between Rama and Vali and the argument that ensued between the two is a subject of hot debate among scholars even to the present day. Various subtle aspects of dharma are cited or quoted in justification of the act of Rama, before summing up the arguments on either side.Other events such as the coronation of Sugreeva, Rama’s stern message to him reminding him of his commitment, and finally the Vanaras’ expedition are discussed in detail.
A versatile scholar in both Tamil and Sanskrit, the author is at ease explaining a particular passage or concept, and the style he adopts to drive home a point is absorbing. In addition to Valmiki and Kamban, he has drawn profusely from the Dharma Sastras, the stotras of Acharyas, and Tamil classics such as Tirukkural, Tolkaappiyam, and Purananooru. Salutations to the author for his inspiring and ennobling exposition of the epic.
