SIVANAI ARINTHAVAR SEEVANAI ARIVAR: K. Manjula; Senthamizh Pathippagam, 15/21, Asiriyar Sangam Kudiyiruppu, Rajaji Nagar Extension, Villivakkam, Chennai-600049. Rs. 120.
THIS BOOK presents the salient features of Saivism under specific heads.
The opening chapter highlights the role of the preceptor in dispelling the nescience of the disciple by teaching him the concepts of Carya, Kriya,Yoga, and Jnana, which constitute the four-fold path to eternal beatitude.
The author spells out what distinguishes Siva, the omniscient, from Jiva, the individual soul steeped in impurities. In the discharge of cosmic functions, the role of Sakti, the dynamic aspect of Siva, is great.
Manjula also explains the ‘intrinsic’ nature of Siva — immutability, the quality of not being limited by space or time, omnipotence, transcendency, eternality, and so on — as also the ‘accidental’ or ‘related’ nature of the Lord, which is revealed in the numerous manifestations that are broadly classified into three categories. They are: Bhoga murta, one that enables the souls to engage in sensory pursuits; Vega murta, the one that corrects the erring souls; and Yoga murta, one that spreads spiritual knowledge leading to liberation.
Overall, the book is informative and well documented.
