Stories of human values
AMBIKA ANANTH
AMMA NANNU KSMAMINCHODDU: Dr.C. Bhavani Devi; Himabindu Publications, 102, Gagan Mahal Apartments, Domalguda, Hyderabad-29. Rs. 100.
THE ALL-too-human feelings in this collection of short stories touch the core of the readers’ hearts.
The portrayal of many characters shows the sensitivity of the writer to the struggle and poignancy of relationships experienced in the rough and tumble of life. ‘Gopuram’ is one such fine story.
‘Aame Vimukthi’ is the story of a man who, as an expression of understanding and compassion, pulls out the life-supporting ventilator to let his bed-ridden wife die in peace.
Bhavani Devi’s style is not flashy. Yet she can capture the reader’s attention to the core elements of her stories. Discontented spouses, disappointed lovers, helpless parents, et al – she doesn’t judge them, but depicts them truthfully and simply.
The title piece is an emotionally complex story, with the mother-daughter relationship as the central theme.
The subtlety of the message comes out at the end with a bang.
Most of the stories reflect the deep concerns of the writer — be they social, familial, or general — and the way they are expressed makes a powerful impact.
‘Vinimayam’ deserves a special mention as it deals with an important issue of how the so called care-takers of children can abuse the trust reposed in them by parents.
