THE FIRST three ‘adhyayas’ (chapters) of the first ‘mandala’ (book) of the Rig Veda comprising 40 ‘suktas’ (and 489 mantras) have been commented upon by Acharya Madhva in his work ‘Rig Bhashya’. Jayatirtha has written a gloss on it. Raghavendraswami has, in his “Mantrartha Manjari,” given a word-for-word meaning for these ‘suktas’ and mantras, relying on the above two works.
This book is the second part of Sripada Rao’s translation of that work covering the second and third chapters of the scripture comprising 21 suktas — the first part dealt with the 19 ‘suktas’ of the first chapter. The publication gives the Rig Vedic text in Devanagiri, the Tamil transliteration, ‘anvaya’ (the prose order), word-by-word meaning, and explanatory notes wherever necessary.
The suktas and the mantras have been arranged alphabetically, enabling quick reference. The quality of the translation is very good, in terms of content and style.
In his prefatory note, the author has explained the uniqueness of the mantras in the Rig Veda and where they find the ‘prayogas’ (uses).
He deserves appreciation for having made available the translation and meaning of these terse and abstruse verses in Tamil for those not acquainted with Sanskrit.
