SOLAMANTAE TENEECHAKAL:
K. T. Thomas, DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 140.
ALLUDING TO the bees that helped the legendary king Solomon to distinguish between the real and artificial flowers, former Supreme Court judge K.T. Thomas attributes his success in the judiciary to God sending bees to help distinguish between justice and injustice. “Solomante Teneechakal” is thus an apt title for his recollections of his days as a judge. This is a sequel to a work that covered the period before he entered the judiciary.
Quite naturally, a good part of the book is taken up by accounts of court cases he handled at various levels.
He discusses the intricate issues involved in them and mentions how he settledthem. He is so unpretentious and the narrative so matter-of-fact that the astuteness he displayed in tackling tricky issues gets played down. It is, however, not difficult to see that as a judge he strove to give the law a human face.
Justice Thomas’s recollections, incidentally, trace the changes that came about in the working of the judiciary. They also provide some glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes in matters like appointment, transfer, and promotion of judges. At a personal level, he reveals that he refused, on a matter of principle, to pay capitation fee for getting his son admitted to a school.
