INDRAYA INDHIYA: by Rajani Palma Dutt, Translated into Tamil by S. Ramakrishnan; New Century Book House Pvt. Ltd, 41B, SIDCO Industrial Estate, Ambattur, Chennai-600098. Rs. 400.
THIS IS a two-in-volume published in Britain before India’s Independence, as it was feared that it would be banned if printed in India. The two books in it cover mostly the British period.
A well-known writer of the Communist Party of India, Rajani Palma Dutt speaks about the ‘divide and rule’ policy of the British vis-À-vis the Hindus and the Muslims and the support they extended to the princely states.
The first book, which is mainly an analysis of the hardships of the people under foreign rule, narrates how the country’s rich natural resources were exploited by the colonisers. The second discusses, with remarkable objectivity, the freedom in its various aspects — mobilisation of the masses across social divides, the effort of the British government to counter the movement and so on — the historic 1937 election, the rise of the Muslim League and the partition.
The author has quoted liberally from historians and political philosophers to substantiate his viewpoints. Marx’s comments on India, including his famous statement about the Asiatic mode of production, are also cited.
In conclusion, he says that world peace and equality among people will be achieved by workers and the progressive forces to build socialism in India. A useful publication on the freedom struggle for students of history.
