Thirukkural, one of the most renowned literary works in Tamil, has been translated by foreign scholars such as G.U. Pope. We understand that there are about 10 traditional commentaries on the work written around 10th century AD. In the recent past, we have come across a number of commentaries in modern Tamil. Among them, the ones by K Subramaniya Pillai, Namakkal Kavignar V. Ramalingam Pillai, Mu. Va., Devaneya Pavanar, Kalaignar Mu Karunanithi, and Thirukkuralar V. Munusamy might be considered very popular across the world.
Basically a poet, Vaa. Mu. Sethuraman has authored a number of books in poetry and prose. Some of his works have been translated in English. He has now produced this commentary on Thirukkural, and the language employed is simple and unambiguous. Each of the 1,330 couplets is paraphrased in a style typical of the commentator. It is a welcome addition to the literature on Thirukkural.
