Study on historical novels

AMBIKA ANANTH

VISHWANATHA DHISHANAHELA: Dr. Gummaluri (Susarla) Indira; HIG 250, Sector 4, MVP Colony, Visakhapatnam. Rs. 180.

THIS BOOK is the outcome of research by the author into Vishwanatha Satyanarayan’s historical novels. Full of eminently readable material, the publication, which studies 30 novels under four heads, has succeeded in bridging the pedantic and the literary values of the novels. Vishwanatha’s characters bring out the depth of Indian conventions, ancient dharma, and vedic culture.

Indira has brought many aspects under one common rubric of studying the central themes of the novels, the focus being on their social and literary relevance and the religious context.

“Dharma Chakram” deals with Buddhist elements in Vedic rituals, while “Chitli Chitlani Gaajulu” talks about the science of Tantra and “Bhramaravasini” speaks about Srividya practice. Many other novels of importance are also discussed, with particular reference to their mythological and historical contexts. This book is an addition to the list of must-read books on Vishwanatha Satyanarayana.
