MOPLA KANDA: Novel by V.D. Savarkar, Tr. Girija Sastri Rashtrotthana Sahitya, Keshava Shilpa, Kempegowda Nagar, Bangalore 560 019, Rs.100.
THIS HISTORICAL novel based on the Mopla (Malabar) rebellion has been translated from the Hindi version of the Marathi novel. The real cause of the upheaval and the impact of it on the social and religious atmosphere in India, especially in the Malabar coast, have not so far been discussed fully and objectively by historians. The book throws a fresh light on several aspects hitherto not written about.
Moplas are the Muslim migrants from Arabia who came to Malabar in the 9th century. So deep was their faith that they wanted to establish the ‘kingdom of God’. Their revolt against the British took on the characteristics of an anti-Hindu campaign that marred the relations between the two religious groups. .
A freedom-fighter, the author has given heart-rending accounts of the violence that took place at the time. While condemning the Moplas for their acts of violence, he also criticises the Hindus for practising untouchability. The preface gives excerpts from press reports related to the events mentioned in the book.
