A biography
SAROJINI PREMCHAND
NAA JEEVITAPU VENDI BANGARU PUTALU: Popati Ramachand Hiranandani; Translated from Hindi by Rajashree Meenalochani; Sahitya Akademi, 35, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi-110001. Rs. 60.
FROM HER early years, Popati had a fascination for books, music, plays, and philosophical discourses. The attic in their house was stacked with books, especially of Sanskrit literature, and she had to leave this treasure behind when she sought refuge in India. A renowned writer in Sindhi, she speaks of her childhood at Hyderabad (Sind) in a way that is so delectable that it heightens the poignancy of the tragic events that followed. At 23, she had to reconstruct her life in a strange land. It is remarkable that she could write in Hindi, English, Parsee, Sanskrit and Sindhi with equal felicity. Her passion and active support for the Sindhiat movement endeared her to many but also left some bitter memories. Though candid in her views and unpretentious in her ways, one can perceive emotion and humaneness ruling high in her relationships. Her prose is replete with poetic imagery and it makes this biography unputdownable. This book is a translation from Hindi..
