PALAGUMMI PADMARAJU RACHANALU — Vol.1: Visalaandra Publishing House, 4-1-435, Bank Street, Hyderabad-500001. Rs. 250.
PALAGUMMI HANDLES reality and rhetoric skilfully. He is fully aware of the thin line that separates story-telling and didactic essay writing. The social and moral messages, veiled though they are in the narrative, make a powerful impact on the reader.
In this collection of 66 stories, 59 are Palagummi’s and the rest are translations of the English version of stories in German. The author, whose writing is simple yet powerful, is very critical of the society in certain respects.
How he captures moments with dexterity is exemplified by “Gaali Vaana” that speaks about the havoc caused by a thunderstorm and, in the process, sharply brings out the helplessness of man when he gets trapped in the web of uncertainties.
“Vaasana leni puvvulu” is a powerful story, handling the psychological and physical aspects of marriage. The lives of Rajarao and Kamala take too many twists and turns and. at the end of it all, while one turns into a poet the other is driven to suicide. An autobiographical essay by the author (translated from English) reveals some of his inspiring facets. Overall, this is an impressive collection.
