MALAYALAM

On self development

K. K. GOPALAKRISHNAN

SADHYMAMENNATHU SHAKTHIYUDE VAKKU: By Barendrakumar; Translated by C.A. Varghese; DC Books, DC Kizhakemuri Edam, Good Shepherd Street, Kottayam-686001. Rs. 130.

THIS BOOK, which is a translation of Barendrakumar’s Can is the word of power, deals basically with the development of human resources.

The focus is, primarily, on the youth and the paradigms of life. He makes the point that it is imperative for one to have an aim in life and to work for the development of self-potential. To substantiate his point, he quotes liberally from a number of thinkers, intellectuals, and litterateurs across the world.

Understandably, the relevance of civic sense and basic values in life is emphasised. Man being a social animal, it is but appropriate that Barendrakumar underscores the importance of cultivating the right attitude towards fellow humans and the society in general.

The book, in a nutshell, highlights the inherent power of the word ‘can’ and commends it to the youth for use as a mantra for them to meditate upon. Another point stressed is the relevance of ‘quality’ in life while living in a society. Some of the injunction-type statements are however clilched. Example: “a teacher should not think that he is into the profession merely for salary.”

The chapters are framed like a priest’s amateur oration and a lecture by a tough secondary school headmaster, and this impairs readability.
