THIS BOOK brings together nearly 60 short stories, published earlier in various magazines. The author is quite clear and purposive. He is keen that any story he writes must impact the readers in some manner — it may make them happy or sad; it may touch their hearts tenderly or shock their sensibilities. In any case, they should be none the worse at the end of their engagement with the story.
The title story, with an exercise in high school composition as its setting, has a poignant ending, which is hinted at subtly in the cover illustration.
Many stories such as “FM radiovum and cell phonum” and “VRS” are pegged on dilemmas one faces in modern-day life and offer a solution after the problem is examined from different angles.
Stories such as “Vivaaga raththu” even as they bring up the pains and sufferings besetting society today, reinforce human resilience and the will to survive the buffets of life.
Many stories are short, reflecting the doldrums into which the form has fallen in most Tamil magazines, but they are no less satisfying. For instance, “Paththu roobai” and “Echchil” make their own points.
