For a healthy heart
RAMYA KANNAN
IDHAYAM: K.M. Cherian, Vikatan Prasuram, 757, Anna Salai, Chennai-600002. Rs. 60.
NO DOUBT, K.M.Cherian, a renowned heart surgeon, is a splendid raconteur. A man of few words otherwise, he comes into his own when the topic of discussion is the human heart. It is this skill and passion that comes through in this slender volume which attempts to provide, in a question-and-answer format, all information related to heart. He begins with a well-told, touching story of Manikandan, who at the age of four had a heart defect. Ananda Vikatan, the Tamil weekly, wrote about him and brought him to the attention of Dr. Cherian. Predictably, a story with a happy ending, Manikandan’s heart defect is mended by the surgeon. What follows is a clear description of the structure and function of the heart, the many ways in which the functioning can go awry, possible birth defects, the necessity to utilise the ‘golden hour’ to revive any patient who has suffered a heart attack, and, above all , the need for organ donation in order to save lives. The style is deliberately kept simple, and the Q&A format helps in sustaining the reader’s interest. The book provides information on lifestyle modifications that could help keep one’s heart healthy and ticking.
