THIRUVAIMOZHI-PANNIRAYIRAPPADI (Third decad): Translation by M. Varadarajan; Sri Ananth Publications, 9&10, First Cross Street, Krishnanagar, Chromepet, Chennai-600044. Rs. 120.
THIRUVAIMOZHI, A work of 1102 verses, sung by Nammazhvar is regarded as the holiest part of Divya Prabandham. It has been commented upon by several scholar-acharyas in succession. One such commentary is Pannirayirappadi, so called because it consists of 12,000 granthas, each grantha being a measuring unit composed of 32 syllables. It was written by Vadikesari Azhagiya Manavaala Jeeyar, who was especially noted for his profound scholarship in Tamil literature, and this provided a special charm to his interpretation. Also he is the one who included word-by-word meaning in the commentary.
This volume, part of a series being brought out on Pannirayirappadi, is on the third ‘Patthu’.
The editor has indicated the ‘Paatabhedas’ that the Jeeyar has chosen. He has also rendered the commentary in lucid Tamil. Regrettably, an error has crept into an Upanishadic quotation (p. 94) wherein ‘Brahma’ (The Absolute Brahman) is implied, whereas the actual reference is to the four-faced god, Brahma. Otherwise, the book is a worthy addition to the Bhagavad-vishaya field, useful to pandits and researchers alike.
