PUTCHALAPALLI SUNDARIAH — Rachanala Sankalanam: Prajasakthi Book House, MH Bhavan, Plot No. 21/1, Azamabad, Hyderabad- 500020. Rs. 120.
THERE ARE any number of popular leaders. But only very few qualify as “People's leader.” Putchalapalli Sundariah (1913-1985) occupies a pride of place in this category. Simple living and high thinking combined with intellectual eminence marked him out.
Sundariah was among the top leaders under whose guidance the Communist party grew into a mass organisation in Andhra Pradesh. Had the party not split, Andhra Pradesh would have seen a Leftist government much earlier than Kerala and West Bengal did.
This book is a collection of his six articles/speeches under the head “People's Democracy in Greater Andhra Pradesh” and 14 under the head “Rural poor masses and land distribution.” There are eight musings on political and cultural affairs.
Sundariah's views on ‘Greater Andhra Pradesh' are an eloquent testimony to his political acumen and analytical brilliance as a grassroots economist. In Parliament and the State legislature, he spoke up for the poor and toiling classes. Through his writings and speeches, he aroused the dormant spirit of the rural masses.
On the whole, this collection can verily be called the “Leftists' Bible”.
