TAMIL

Social novel

T. RAMAKRISHNAN

MARUPAKKAM: Ponneelan; New Century Book House, 41-B, SIDCO Industrial Estate, Ambattur, Chennai-600098. Rs. 375.

THE KANYAKUMARI region, traditionally recognised as an important centre of intellectual activity, has produced a number of prominent Tamil writers, and Ponneelan is one among them.

A recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award (1994), Ponneelan is known for his inclination towards Marxian thought on art and culture, and his ideological leaning comes across clearly in this book.

Marupakkam is a novel that captures the social and political history of the country in general and that of Kanyakumari in particular. The major events this region witnessed over the past five or six decades are narrated.

And the author has effectively brought out the inter-play of religion, politics, and social pulls and pressures by weaving his story around the struggle people in the lower strata of society are waging every day.

From the book, one can get to know the relevance and significance of several historical events that shook Kanyakumari since Independence.
