NHPC notification on Assam project

GUWAHATI, Aug. 23

WORK on the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border can officially be said to have begun with the issuance of public notification by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd (NHPC) under section 29 of the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948.

The notification is issued to enable the licensee and other interested persons to make representations, if any, within two months.

Subansiri Lower H.E.Project (cap 8x250 MW) on the Subansiri river will be one of the three mega power projects to be taken up as Subansiri Basin Projects. The estimated cost of the present project is Rs 7,468.91 crore at March, 2001 price line excluding the transmission system and the completion cost is Rs 9,276.73 crore. It will be completed in seven years by 2008-09 along with all developed infrastructure.

The project will generate 7551.10 MU of power annually in a 90 per cent dependable year. Some of the other salient features of the project are that it will have a catchment area of 34,900 sq km with a submergence area of 3,436 hectares. The dam will be a concrete gravity dam of 116 mt height, will have an orifice type spillway with nine gates.

The underground power houses will have eight units with Francis type of turbine and 91-mt gross head. There will be five diversion tunnels of 9.5 m diameter. Total length of access tunnels will be 3,065 metres. The right bank of the dam is in Lower Suban siri district of Arunachal Pradesh and the left bank falls in Dhemaji district of Assam.
