GRT Grand Days to consolidate

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Dec. 28

GRT Grand Days will focus on consolidation following its recent acquisition of a hotel property in Chennai and the proposed acquisition of the India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (ITDC) holiday resort located near Mahabalipuram.

At a press conference here on Friday on the occasion of the award of ISO 9001:2000 certification to GRT

Grand Days, Mr G. Rajendran, Chairman, G.R. Thanga Maligai (P) Ltd, which owns the GRT Grand Days, said that further developments in acquisition of the ITDC holiday resort were awaiting clearance of certain legal formalities. Once these were sorted out further progress may be expected around March 2002, he said.

Later, in an informal chat with reporters, Mr M.O. Koshy, Vice-President, GRT Grand Days, said that the acquisition was estimated at Rs 6.8 crore and covered an extent of 47 acres. It also involved payment of voluntary retirement compensation to the ITDC employees there. Once some of the legal issues have been sorted out, further developments may be expected. Meanwhile, following the recent acquisition of the Radisson Hotel in Chennai, the company would focus on consolidation, he said.

Addressing the press conference, Mr Koshy said that GRT Grand Days, a member of the Days Inn chain of business hotels of the US, is among the earliest in the hospitality industry to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification. The certification has largely been restricted to manufacturing companies and industries. The latest version certifies quality systems and procedures, and is applicable to the service industry, he said.

The certification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) will help enhance GRT's brand image and assure clients consistent quality and service benchmarked to international standards. It provides for continuous improvement, training and increases quality consciousness. The ISO 9001:2000 adopts an approach compatible with other management systems such as ISO-14000 environment management system, he said.
