Why i hate... Devdas

On the flipside - a movie released around the same period - grand, mighty budgets, huge hype and another claimant to the most expensive movie made so far (a trend that continues since Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja) - a mighty tragedy for more reasons than the fatal outcome of its protagonist.

Yes, it was a blockbuster and it spawned off more such epic efforts - but it set Indian cinema back a few years...

It made us believe that tragedy has to be gargantuan, it has to be nailed into the audience's hearts, it has to be hammed up and hemmed in and sung about - and made the world believe that Indians are the richest people in the world - and Indian cinema is all gloss and showy brilliance...

The worst performances - the worst directorial idioms - the most annoying actor ticks and Madhuri, Madhuri, Madhuri (the redemption!).

I know when it released and EVERYBODY watched the film - the irony of Indian cinema.

(as told to sudhish kamath)
