Why I like... Maqbool

Karthik Kumar, actor

This film woke me up to the possibility that brilliant cinema need not necessarily require mega budgets, nor major stars nor the backing of a major production — it requires soul, talent, great acting and a director with passion and oodles of in telligence — and that Indian cinema can compete with the world out there.

This is the greatest Shakespeare I have ever seen — Vishal’s dialogues and music with so much soul that it shakes your mortal being, screenplay by Tyrewala, the cinematography by Hemanth Chaturvedi, performances by Irfan, Pankaj, Om and Naseer (the witches of Macbeth!!!) and Tabu, Tabu, Tabu...

Heartbreaking to think that I did not know when it released in my city (it did!). This is the greatest Indian cinema has done in the last 25 years and it was done with the greatest production discipline, actor rehearsals and on a shoe string budget. Let’s raise a toast to that!
