My first break
writer-director Gandhi Krishna
How it happened
You may find it strange, but my first break is Ananda Thandavam, the film I’m working on at the moment with Tamanna and Siddharth. My debut effort was the ambitious Engineer with Arvind Swamy, Madhuri Dixit and Venu Arvind in the main roles. We completed 80 per cent of the film before the project ran into rough weather. I was vexed. Then I did Nila Kaalam for television which won the National Award for child actor Udayaraj, and made quite an impact at film fests. Soon Chellamae, Vishal’s debut with Reema Sen, came my way and went on to become a commercial hit. Oscar Ravichandran watched it and asked me to come over. He asked me to narrate a script. I told him I had two — one my dream project, and the other a full-fledged commercial. He simply said, “Let’s go for your dream,” read the script in 10 days and got back to me with the green signal.
How it felt
The story was written by Sujatha about 25 years ago and I fell flat for it even then. It has to be recorded on celluloid, I felt, and worked on the script for nearly 15 years. Now I’ve changed it a little to suit the modern day. The scenes will be fresh and new, but the essence is the same. The story has had wide readership and people will be keen to know how I’ve dealt with it. I’m aware of my responsibility and I’m treading with utmost care. I’ve got a wonderful producer and a committed cast and crew. My life’s ambition is being realised.
How life changed
I think and live Ananda Thandavam. Again Sujatha is writing the dialogue for the film. We have shot for 40 days in the actual locations where the story is based. Just a month’s work in the U.S. remains, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
