Neha Bhasin.

You said you won your first ever award at the Vijay awards. And this, six years since Viva happened to you.

I have won prizes in school and college but yes, this is my first professional ‘award’. The going has been tough since the very beginning. But this is the path I wanted to walk on. There are days when I am like “What’s life?!” and there are days when I think it rocks. After Viva, I had to start all over again. I have always wanted to go solo. From portfolio to video profile, I had to do everything to shrug off the ‘ex-Viva’ tag.

Did you have to twist your tongue too much for Tamil?

Tamizh you mean. (laughs) That’s the first thing Yuvan’s assistant Vasudevan taught me. He said the minute you get the lyrics right, you’ll be ok... Once I got them right and by the time I recorded my third song for Ameer’s Yogi for Yuvan Shankar Raja, I was in a better position.

Who do you think is the most successful Viva member today?

I really don’t care about that. Success is a journey, it is not a destination. I wish all of them good luck.

You were once averse to the idea of modelling, VJing or acting, you said it just wasn’t you... but in a recent interview, you said you want to be an item girl.

I think I may have been a little misquoted about wanting to be an item girl. But, I’m not averse to it. Yes, I was not open to the idea of modelling or acting, years back. But the minute you are not a bad looking person, they think you are an actor. I love dressing up, but I like to do it for music. I know the concept of pop star or diva doesn’t exist in India but it’s coming up. Sixty years later, when I look back, I will be happy being a music person.

Name one Indipop band or artiste whom you can’t stand or think is corny.

That would be rude. (we persist) Okay, Anaida. She is not pleasant.
