LOVE/HATE

Why I like... Johnny

Bosskey, TV Host

In the last 30 years that I’ve been watching movies, the three films that are right on top of the list are Nizhal Nijamagirathu, Johnny and Nayakan.

Of the three, the best I like is Johnny because I could see most of Rajnikant’s style stand out in everything he did and it was beautifully directed by Mahendran. The screenplay was top class with its blend of suspense, crime and romance and above all, the presentation was stylish.

The romance and chemistry between Rajnikant and Sridevi… never has love looked more real in Tamil cinema… How she is first drawn towards him, how he rejects her love and how they reconcile… extraordinary direction.

That’s the first film I loved on dual roles.

Ilaiyaraja’s music was a big plus. It had five brilliant songs, all female solos except for one by SPB. I became a fan of Ilaiyaraja only after that movie.
