My first break

Ramesh Vinayagam

How it happened

Actually, I have to classify how it all happened into three parts. In 1986, my first album “Pratidhwani” was released, thanks to singer S. P. Balasubramaniam’s efforts, and I was recognised as a music director. Then director Moulee offered me a Telugu film in 1989, Paila Patchisu. Director Vasanth was responsible for my third break as music director in Yei, Nee Romba Azhaga Irrukay in my mother tongue Tamil, in 2002. The film University consolidated my position that led me to do Kamal Haasan’s Nala Damayanthi, a musical hit. Kamal Haasan sang an English song of the country genre in it. ‘Crazy’ Mohan, who admires me a lot, made me do the titles for all his TV serials.

How it felt

I was elated but at the same time conscious of the great works of the pioneers; hence I had to strive to rise to the expectations of directors and fans. It is divine grace that helps me churn out hit after hit. I feel filmdom is the place where I belong.

How life changed

Success draws attention not only to the work but also to the person who does it. This attention spurs me to give my best as far as my work is concerned. It also makes me want to become a better musician and a better human being.
