ITSY-BITSY

Divya’s next

Fresh from her act in Vaaranam Ayiram, Divya Spandana is doing a film, Kaathal 2 Kalyanam, opposite a new hero — Arya’s brother Shahid. The film is being shot in Chennai and the director is a former apprentice of Mani Ratnam. John Vijay of Oram Po fame also stars in the film, and plays a drunkard. The movie is about a family on a temple tour of South India. It looks like a light romantic comedy is in the making. But, with a name like Kaathal 2 Kalyanam, will the film get the full subsidy for ‘Tamil titles’ granted by the State Government or just part of it, thanks to the little number in between?

Who gets the credit?

The news that the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire has been nominated for a Golden Globe has had an electrifying effect on everyone. Nobody in India seems to care about the nominees for the other awards; it seems enough that A.R. Rahman has been nominated. It is strange though that Rahman has composed a song, which is a rip-off of the infamous Choli ke Peeche song from Subhash Ghai's blockbuster Khalnayak. The song by M.I.A featuring Blaaze sounds like an M.I.A composition, complete with her trademark rap style. Seeing the credits on the album will sure be interesting!

Mallika's hiss

Cinematographer Madhu Ambat is back on the popular cinema scene after a hiatus. He will be seen behind the lens in Jennifer Lynch's debut directorial venture Hiss aka Naagin: The Snake Woman, starring Mallika Sherawat. Jennifer Lynch is the daughter of director David Lynch, known for films such as Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man. Hiss is a remake of Nagin, the 1976 hit based on the story of a snake which returns in a human form to wreak vengeance on the man who killed its partner. Mallika Sherawat plays the snake woman and the scene that involves the metamorphosis of the woman into a snake is said to have been wonderfully picturised, what with amazing computer graphics by Robert Kurrtzman of Narnia fame. Jennifer was apparently all praise for Madhu Ambat's work in the film.
