Shortkut to fame?

Amrita Rao sheds her girl-next-door image for a fresh, sexy look in Shortkut The Con is On, says harshikaa udasi

"I’m not waiting to work in movies only on the basis of how I’ll look. I sign only when I like the script and my role"

Throw out dull salwar suits and casual jeans; bring in skimpy outfits, bikini tops et al — that’s Amrita Rao’s mantra now. The cute girl-next-door, who has played bratty as well as coy in her movies, is all set to wow audiences with her fresh, sexy look in her upcoming film Shortkut The Con is On. So, what happened to the ‘homely’ Amrita? “This isn’t a makeover; makeovers are for people wishing to embrace a certain lifestyle. I’m doing it only for this film, as I play an actor who needs to dress in a certain way,” she says. But has she decided a little skin show can’t harm? “I’m not waiting to work in movies only on the basis of how I’ll look. I sign only when I like the script and my role. And Shortkut… is an original script with amazing characters,” she adds.

Amrita plays an actor named Manasi in this film about three people from the film industry. They come with different mindsets and weigh the pros and cons of taking shortcuts in life. She shares screen space with Akshaye Khanna, her romantic interest in the film, and Arshad Warsi. “My role is that of an actor whose family pressures guide her professional moves. I can’t relate to the character, as I have rather non-interfering parents. But playing an actor is great because you are not bound by characterisation. You become what she becomes.”

Amrita has done less than 20 films in seven years — by Bollywood standards, and especially with the repertoire that her contemporaries boast of, that’s abysmally low! And, though she had a cute start with Ishq Vishq, a confident performance in Main Hoon Na, followed by the super hit Vivaah, Amrita hasn’t been able to sustain her position. The girl, who singles out her performance as the illiterate Kamala of Shyam Benegal’s Welcome to Sajjanpur as the character she loves the most, doesn’t have any projects at hand. Hopefully, her sizzling new style, aided by designer Manish Malhotra will be able to give her another shy at the stumps.
