Back where he belongs

Rajeev Khandelwal is back on the small screen, hosting “Sach Ka Saamna”

Getting personal Rajeev Khandelwal

Years ago, he set the hearts of television audiences aflutter with his smouldering good looks. Then, he made the transition to the big screen with the critically acclaimed Aamir, becoming one of those rare television actors who made a mark in Bollywood. His second film Peter Gaya Kaam Se is almost complete, and now, Rajeev Khandelwal is back on television, anchoring “Sach Ka Saamna”.

Excerpts from an interview.

At this stage of your career, why did you decide to do a television show?

Siddhartha Basu (the producer of “Sach Ka Saamna”) is the sole reason I’m on the show. A few months ago, he told me he wanted me to host a TV show and sent across a DVD of “The Moment of Truth”. I told him I was busy with films, but five minutes into watching the DVD, I was in.“Sach Ka Saamna” is a very interesting concept, and I did not want to miss out on something so challenging. When I look back in life, I want to feel proud that I did things that were not run of the mill.

The show is all about asking uncomfortable questions. How comfortable are you with that?

I was uncomfortable. I had to work very hard to get comfortable. A lot of credit has to go to Siddhartha Basu who groomed me, and taught me the art of asking shocking personal questions. But, all of us can identify with these questions.

Will you ever sit on the hot seat?

I would definitely like to.

Don’t you think a game show where the contestant has to speak some unpleasant truths is risky? It can even break a family.

Will a family survive on a bundle of lies? Certain truths, if kept inside for long, can be fatal. All the contestants know what questions are going to be asked; they also know their family and friends are going to be around. We should not be judgmental about anyone.

How is Peter Gaya Kaam Se shaping up?

Just five more days of work, and it’s done. I will also begin shooting for my third film, Return Gift, in October.

It is said you have been signed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Chenab Gandhi

Yes, I’m doing a film with Mr. Bhansali, and hope I can fulfil his expectations. We will start shooting the film in a couple of months.

Finally, what is the one personal question you would never like to be asked?

(Laughs) Oh, let that remain personal. The day I want to bare it all, I will.
