Some FAQs

Information provided by the Canadian Education Centre on some basic questions.

Can you tell me something about the Canadian Education System?

Admission to a Canadian university/college/university-college or technical institute is decided solely by the individual institution. Universities offer a broad range of degrees from undergraduate to doctorate. Colleges offer a broad range of diplomas, which are more vocationally oriented, skill-based, specific and shorter in duration compared to a university degree. These diplomas may have a transfer agreement with universities for students to transfer up to 60 credits and gain entry into the third year of a degree programme. Of late, certain colleges are offering degree programmes also. A university-college offers both diplomas and degrees.

When should I start the application process?

We recommend that you start researching the university/college you want to apply to approximately one year in advance. Explore all your options with important personal indicators in mind: finance, location, program of study, etc.

When is the main intake?

For universities, the primary intake is in September/Fall Session, although a few do allow for a January/Winter Session intake. For colleges, there are usually three intakes in a year: September, January and May.

When are the application deadlines?

Each institution (be it a university/college/university-college) has it's own deadline and some are subject/department specific.

Are the deadlines flexible?

For the degree programmes, university deadlines are not flexible. However, for diploma and post-graduate diplomas, deadlines can be varied and flexible. If you miss all the deadlines, you can contact the CEC and ask about their special programme i.e. the `Late Applicant Program'. This is held twice a year and the CEC facilitates intakes for the September session and for the January session.

Do I need TOEFL/IELTS?

Yes, it is highly recommended that you do any English Fluency test. You can do your TOEFL/IELTS or the Canadian equivalent CAEL. Most universities and colleges in Canada require a minimum TOEFL score of 213 for an undergraduate programme and a minimum of 237 for graduate programmes or IELTS band of 6.0 - 6.5 are expected.

Are there scholarships/loans

available to international students?

There are very few scholarships at the undergraduate level, although some universities do offer partial entrance scholarships that are primarily based on your academic performance. There are many more scholarships at the graduate (MA) and post-graduate (Ph.D.) level.

Is there an application fee?

Yes, most universities and colleges have an application fee that can vary from CDN$30-$500. These fees must be submitted in the form of a Canadian Dollar draft or paid via a credit card along with the application.

Where do I start?

If you are residing in or near Delhi, please visit the CEC. If distance does not allow this you can visit our website: www.studycanada.ca/India/The Government of Canada website has information on every aspect of Canada, its people and its government. Get the new student visa kit, including a revised application form, personal information form, and detailed list of documents required in the Visa and Immigration section of the Canadian High Commission in Delhi.

How about the cost factor?

One of the major determining factors in a student's decision to study abroad is the cost: the tuition fee, residence, books & study materials, etc. On an average, tuition fee for one year of undergraduate study in Canada will cost approximately CDN$13,00.00 or Rs. 3.5 lakhs.
