Economics and Mathematics, strong as ever
We asked principals to speak out on how different courses are viewed today in the job market, to help students make an informed decision. Here is another of the responses. Mail advice or responses to edufeedback@thehindu.co.in
Our college offers B.Com (General), B.Com (Corporate Secretaryship), BBA, B.Sc. (Information Systems Management), B.Sc. Computer Science and BCA. We also offer MCA, approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education), New Delhi, and M.Sc. (Information Technology).
At present, the most sought-after course is B.Sc. (Information Systems Management). Students who are inclined to pursue careers in Business and Management, find this course interesting because it is a combination of Commerce, Information Practices and Management. Students are also interested in studying BBA.
However, there is still a high demand for B.Com. In general, students continue to opt for B.Sc. (ISM), B.Com and BBA courses in big numbers.
If the course that a student prefers is filled up, then we convince him to select other courses of equal value. For example, if a student opts for B.Com (General) and if we are unable to admit her then we suggest she take B.Com (Corporate Secretaryship). We explain to the student in detail the advantages of studying B.Com (CS) and how it would ensure a bright career in the corporate sector.
About `outdated' courses. At present, we do not offer any non-utility course. The courses we offer generally are much in demand. In the past, we did have B.A. English Literature, but we were forced to close down the course as there were not many takers.
Our college students are attracted towards Mathematics though it is an allied subject. Since study of Mathematics helps to acquire quantitative skills that underpins performance in fields such as IT/Molecular Biology/Cryptography/Computer Graphics/Physics/Space Research Organisation, the demand for it is ever growing.
Economics again is an allied subject that has also proved to be interesting. The students feel that the study of Economics enables them to comprehend the significance of the subject and the current trends in the economy.
Thus subjects like Economics and Mathematics still retain a strong foothold in our college.
