Satellite e-learning tool

HCL Comnet has developed a tool for e-learning that uses satellite technology for distance education.

While there are several drawbacks like lack of interactivity, no uniformity in teaching, poor dissemination of information in the current distance education scenario, the new technology of HCL Comnet, SpaceTeach, offers interactive distance education and learning, according to HCL Comnet's founder partner and vice-president (customer advocacy), S. Barathy.

SpaceTeach used VSATs for e-learning and had a number of advantages including multicasting compatability, central manageability, geographical reach and cost-effectiveness over other mediums like leased lines and ISDN, he said at a conference on e-learning organised by Bharat Exhibitions in New Delhi.

The uniqueness of this tool was the use of simplex technology instead of duplex, which resulted in a saving of 50 per cent on bandwidth costs, Mr. Barathy said.

IIT-Bombay had been using this technology and had created excellent content for specialised courses for postgraduates to enhance their educational levels and for the working professionals. He said the cost of installing a terminal would be Rs. 11 lakhs. — PTI
