Picture this profession!

The media offers a good career option and photojournalism as a course would give a better focus to students who want to enter the profession.

BRIGHT COLOURS, sharpness and realism brought out in a photo get etched in the minds of people instantly. A good photograph can convey more than a meaningful paragraph. Just as a good piece of writing, accompanied by a photo creates instant impact.

This is what photo-journalism is all about. It is the marriage of words and pictures, a profession gaining popularity in the recent times.

Due to the rising demand for professional photo-journalism, the need for introducing new courses in the field was felt. This has led the Jaigopal Garodia photojournalism academy in Chennai to introduce a preparatory certificate course in photojournalism, says S. Muthukrishnan, principal and convener of the course.

This part time course covers the subjects in depth with extensive practical sessions. This short-term foundation course that begins from July 16 will be conducted for four months up to October 17. It will have 33 sessions of two hours each. Classes will be held between 4.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. on Saturdays and between 10.00 a.m. and 12 noon on Sundays.

Open to all age groups, students who have passed the Tenth Standard, with a fluency in English and Tamil are welcome to join. Only those with an inherent interest in photography and with a flair for writing are chosen for the course. Those who are already doing their courses in visual communication and teachers can join the course, adds the convener.

Classes on theory and practice in photography will be held and journalism would cover the concept of writing for magazines and newspapers. In photojournalism, illustrated articles and photo features would be looked into in detail. Assignments would comprise of preparing photo features, and other outdoor sessions on photography. Candidates are expected to use their own cameras and films and make prints at their own cost for practical assignments. Sundays would be reserved for practical sessions.

The students are expected to produce twelve photographs with captions and complete two illustrated photo stories to qualify for the certificate.

Classes will be conducted in English and Tamil. As part of the course, there would be lectures by reputed photographers and organisations. The academic panel consists of personalities such as Balu Mahendra, Malan, Sashi Nair, Ponnusamy and S. Muthukrishnan.

Further details and registration forms for the course can be obtained from the Principal, Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya, U-6, Annanagar, Chennai-40. Ph: 2628 9909, 2621 3224.
